Chicken Barbecue October 16 2010

Taylor Fire Department, Ladder Company 95 will host its semi-annual chicken barbecue on Saturday, October 16 2010, from 12-5 p.m. The dinner is $8 per person and will be held in the Fire Company hall, 614 Union St., Taylor. Tickets will be available at the door.  Tickets can also be  be obtained by either calling John Tigue (570) 878-1466 or seeing a memembers from Ladder 95.  

Everybody loves and brags about our homemade baked beans. Other items included with the dinner is our main attraction a 1/2 of chicken slathered with the fire department secrete Barbecue Sauce. Also included are our homemade potato salad, dessert and beverages.

The Fire Department will display LADDER 95, BRUSH 95, TANKER 95, and Command 95 the residents and children are encouraged to explore them during the BBQ. 

Also, the Truck Company tools will be on display. In addition to this Ladder 95 will be selling T shirts and MUGS at the door. The prices for these items are : Short Sleeve Shirts $10.00. Long Sleeve Shirts $15.00. Ladder 95 MUGS $5.00.

Ladder 95 responds to a fully involved vehicle fire

Ladder 95, along with Engine 95, Rescue 95 and Chief 95 responded to a fully involved vehicle fire.  The fire was located at the 100 block of Chambers St.. Chief 95 arrived on scene and reported a fully involved engine compartment fire  Rescue 95 crews pulled a 1 1/2 line while the crew of Ladder 95 opened up the hood, of the Chevy blazer.  Crews were on scene for 1/2 hour


 
Heavy rains cause basment flooding throughout Taylor

Brush 95 along with Rescue 95 and Chief 95 were dispatched to 102 El Drive for a flooded basement, on Sunday, May 13th around 12:30 PM. This would prove to be a busy day for the Brush 95 crew. A call came into Lackawanna Communication Center for one flooded basement. This would turn out to be 10 flooded basements in the area of El Drive, Billy Lane and Oak St. This was due to a freak rain storm that left 3-4 inches of rain, in less than an hour and flooded numerous basements throughout the Borough. Chief 95 would request Brush 93, Brush 2, Rescue 2 and Rescue 98 to assist. Brush 93 and Brush 2 would assist the Brush 95 crews in the area El Drive, Billy Lane and Oak St. Rescue 2 and Rescue 98 would assist Rescue 95 in the area of Reynolds Ave and Central Taylor. Brush 95, Brush 93 and Brush 2 would begin pumping out all the basements and controlling utilities. Brush 95 and Brush 93 also set up a pump to pump the water from the cornier of Billy Lane and El Drive to Oak St. This was done to move the water that was being pumped out of the basements to another drain in hopes of keeping the water out of the residents. Rescue 95 also performed a water rescue from a vehicle that an occupant became trapped in due to the rising water in the roadway and the Taylor Police also did a separate water rescue of their own. While Rescue 95 was responing to assit the Taylor PD on  Prince St. it was observed that a railway suspended about 15 feet above the roadway had washed out and CP Rail was notified to stop all train traffic out of the Taylor Yards. The crews worked for approx. 5 ½.

Ladder responds to Gas leak

Station 95 responded to a natural gas leak at 121 S Ridge street in Taylor.  A construction worker drove a pin through the gas line along side the house.  Ladder 95 crews arived on scene and crimped the line and checked the house for any gas with the MSA Gas meter.  PG energy arived on scene and shut the gas off at the main and 95 units were put back in service by command.


 
Ladder 95 responds to Structure fire in Old Forge

Ladder 95 along with staion 93 and 98 reponded to a reported structure fire at the Hill Crest Shades factory in Old forge on Thursday May 20 at 18:38 hours.  The ladder was on scene in aprox. 7 mins. and was put right to work.  The crew from the Ladder 95 vented and laddered the bulding and asst. E-93 with getting a hose line to the second floor via ground ladder. And asst. Ladder 93 with overhaul.  Due to other fires in Luzerne County and surounding areas Rescue 23 and Engines 7 and 2 from the city of Scranton were brought in by Chief 98 for man power.


 
SEMI ANNUAL CHICKEN BARBECUE WAS A HUGE SUCCESS

The Taylor Fire Department Ladder 95 Semi Annual Chicken Barbecue was one of the most  successful barbecues yet . We would like to say THANK YOU to everyone one for supporting our BARBECUE. Our door sales of 150 dinners, was sold out at 1:30PM. The next Barbecue will be held in October.  We hope to see everyone one again.and some new faces, if you need advance tickets for the October Barbecue, please call 878-1466


 
Fire rips through 416-418 W Taylor St

Ladder 95, along with Rescue 95, Quint 95 and Chief 95 were dispatched to a working structure fire, with entrapment. The call came in just after 6:00PM, for a structure fie at 416-418 W Taylor St in the Borough. Chief 95 arrived to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the third floor attic area and called for Rescue 98 as the RIT Team. A neighbor and his friend helped the resident out of the burning home before the Taylor Fire Department arrived.  Mike Piasecki, 36, of 405 W. Taylor St., and Bill Banks, 41, of Moosic, were at Mr. Piasecki's home when they noticed the flames and raced across the street to get Mr. Keating to safety. Mr. Keating, who was getting out of the shower, had no idea that flames were pouring out of his home's attic. Rescue 95 , Capt Jenkins, Nash and Firfighter Harrison, arrived and stretched a 1 ½ inch hand line to the attic to knock the fire down, . Ladder 95 crews arrived and made their way up to the roof. Lt Mochan and Capt Crosby cut a vent hole on the 418 side of the structure, via Quint 95.  Firefighter Webb made his way to the basement, to control the utilities of the structure. Firefighter Osmoila and Chief 951 Tigue, pulled a 1 ½ line from Rescue to protect the exposures and to knock down the fire coming out of the eves and attic window. After this task was completed Firefighter Osmoila, Bonitz and Chief 951 Tigue laddered the A, B and D side of the structure. Mochan and Crosby also cut another Vent hole in the middle of the duplex. A Second Alarm was dispatched and brought in Ladder 93 and Engine 112, as the second due Engine Company. Ladder 93 was directed by Chief Jones to get there Ladder to the roof and cut another Vent hole on the 416 side of the structure. Ladder 93 Capt Larry Semenza made his way to the roof to cut two vent holes on the 416 side of the structure.  Capt Crosby and Chief 951Tigue, made their way to the 3rd floor attic to breach the wall in between the attic of the residents. Crews from the 112 Engine also made their way to the attic to relieve the Rescue crews from the attic and start overhaul. After the wall was open Capt Crosby graded a hand line and knocked down the fire on the ceiling and eves of the attic. Tigue then cut a Vent Hole on side A of the structure and then began pulling ceilings. Lt Mochan set up vent fans to get fresh air up to the attic. Ladder 95 crews along with crews from Rescue 2 completed salvage of the residents belongs. The cause of the fire appeared to be accidental, originating in the attic. The official cause of the fire remained under investigation by fire marshals. American Red Cross of Lackawanna County is providing food, clothing and shelter for the residents. Crews operated on scene for two and a half hours.

 
   
   
Ladder 95 Playing Host for the Pennsylvania State University Landscape Architecture Department.

Ladder 95 will be playing host for the Taylor Borough Planning Commission meeting, regarding its Taylor Colliery Project .  The meeting will be held  Monday, April 19, beginning at 6 p.m. at  Ladder 95' s headquarters, 614 Union Street Taylor

The meeting will give the public an opportunity to review proposed plans for the development of the Taylor Colliery site and the adjacent Feltsville property, as proposed by a group of fourth- and fifth-year students from the Pennsylvania State University Landscape Architecture Department. Guests will also have the opportunity to comment on and shape the future of these important community development projects.

The Taylor Planning Commission has been methodically exploring the potential of the 150-acre Colliery property for the last several years.

Happy 91st Birthday Mr. Harold Miller!!

Happy 91st Birthday to Mr. Harold Miller!!!  Mr. Miller Turned 91 years old on April 4 2010. Harold is a life time member of The Taylor Hose and Engine Co#1 and has been a member of the fire dept. since Febuary 13 1940.  Mr. Miller is still very active in the Fire Depapment,he is the tresurer of the Firemans Relief Association and is a trustee of the Fire deparpment.  The members of Ladder 95 threw Mr. Miller a small party with cake, pizza and soda for his birthday at  Aprils monthly meeting.

   For a reminder to all members the company meets the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm!!!


 
Crews assist Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry to battle East Mountain Forest Fire

Brush 95, Tanker 95 and Chief 951, along with thePennsylvania Bureau of Forestry. Crews were occupied much of Saturday battling a Forest Fire  on East Mountain. Crews operated on extinguishing the fire for approximately  15 hours. A campfire appears to have started the first brush fire Saturday afternoon. But crews were called back out about six hours later when a second fire .State forestry officials said  the wildfire that charred nearly 400 acres on East Mountain . 


 
   
   
Crews assist Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry and Old Forge Fire Department

Brush 95, Tanker 95 and Chief 951, along with Chief 93a Engine 93  and 93-3 and Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry. Responded to Old Forge for a large Brush Fire, near Saint Stanislaus Cemetery.  Spring has arrived, and so have the brush fires that normally come with it..  The Call came in around 3:15 for a reported fire on Keyser ave in the area around GILCHRIST TRUCKING.  Chief 93A responded and requested units to Holy Cross Cemetery.  When access could not be made into the  woods from  this directions, crews relocated to Saint Stanislaus Cemetery.  Crews from the Bureau of Forestry and the 95 units, hiked into the woods, to extinguished the 2 plus acres that were on fire.   Access could not be made with the vehicles, so the hiking was the only way to make access.  Crews operated on extinguishing the fire for approximately 2 1/2 hours


 
95 Ladder ATTEND TRAINING CLASSES at attend Fire College Weekend, In Hughesville, PA

The 95 Ladder crew left the 95 Headquarters early Saturday morning to attend Fire College Weekend, in Hughesville, PA. The classes started on Saturday March 13 and ran till Sunday March 14. Chief 951 John Tigue, Ladder 95 Captain Joe Crosby, Safety Office Jim Webb, Ladder 95 LT Ray Mochan and firefighter Joe Crosby enrolled and completed 16 hours of STRUCTURAL FIRE RESCUE.. This course will increase the student’s knowledge in methods of rescuing victims from buildings under fire conditions. Topics discussed and practiced are search procedures, victim handling techniques, and methods of removing victims from above and below grade situations. Firefighter Natalie Bonitz attended ARSON DETECTION FOR THE FIRST RESPONDER. This course provided a clear definition of the role of initial responder organizations and to provide essential knowledge to enable them to recognize the potential of an intentionally set fire, preserve evidence, and properly report the information to appropriate officials


 
SMOKE CONDITION 201-203 CHURCH ST

Ladder 95 along with Rescue 95, Engine 95 and Ambulance 939 were dispatched to 201-203 Church St.  in Taylor .  The call came in as  a reported smell of gas in the residence. Rescue 95 arrived and found a smoke condition from the chimney and heavy smoke in the basement.    Engine 95 established a water supply. L:adder 95 and  Rescue 95 found the source of the smoke to be a malfunctioning oil furnace . The furnace was shut down and Ladder 95 crews ventilated the structure.  Crews operated on scene for a 1/2 hour.  Amercian Red Cross was also on scene, but were not needed since no residents were displaced.
